Nuts & Bolts - The Squirrels
Nuts was born in a Boston Fern and Bolts was attacked by a cat when he was a wee pink worm with feet.
Nuts and Bolts, yep we know, it wasn't us. They were named by Nicky, she raised them by hand, because that's what she does, she talks to the animals. If you don't know her go and see her and Jae, the island vetenarian at Summer Cafe, awesome place, great food, coffee and of course, there are always animals.
It's all true, Nuts was born here in one of our ferns and unfortunately his mum was a bit pissed off when Chris watered her home with her baby in it. Alerted by his ear piercing screams, after waiting some time to see if she would return to move him, we removed the littles fella, dried him off and hung a box with dry bedding right next to the fern but she never came back to get him. So we called Nicky, because that's what you do when you have an animal emergency. Who you gonna call? Yep, you got it, Nicky and Jae. So Nuts was the first, and once Nicky had masterfully raised him to be a fine, strong young man he was brought back here, to reiontroduce to the big wide world. After a few nights of hiding under a blanket in his cage, and wandering the nearby trees during the day, he decided that he had had enough of our care and spent his first night out in the wild. This was about when we installed the squirrel bridge, which is a piece of wood with tiny temple bells on so that we can here them coming and offer them food.
Here's a pictire of Nuts being fed by Yoda with the Squirrel Bridge in the background.
Bolts was next. He was brought to Nicky by a local resident, becuase that's what we do, yep you know it. He was rescued from the claws of a cat by Roz, lost a toe in his first epic battle of his early days on the planet. But again now in safe hands, albeit one toe short, he was given the best second chance ever. Nicky now a pro in the husbandry of wild rodents raised Bolts like her own child. Even feeding him beautifull butterfly pee blossoms, lucky little bugger. And as the Nuts rewilding was such a momentous sucess, Bolts was also brought here to The Gold Bar for release. By this point we purchased a very fancy ornate cage for him to spend his nights in while gathering the courage to head out into the great green yonder. Bolts however had other ideas, he decided to stay, he took to harnessing the power of alcohol to gather his bravado, stealing customer beer and cocktails and misscalculating the occasional jump. Disclaimer: we in no way encourage wild animals, tame ones, or humans of any age to consume alcohol, it is entirely voluntary and despite our best efforts to discourage Bolts he proved quite persistant. Even once angrily knocking over a glass of Giorgio's beer, so utterly disgusted that he wouldn't share, before leaping up onto Girgio's shoulder and urinating all over him.
Thankfully, eventually, Bolts gave up booze for women.
At the time of writing this article Nuts & Bolts are here everyday, they wake us in the morning for bananas and coconut, and are best seen after 5pm until sunset. But the best part, they now bring all their families and friends, around 2 dozen in all, living the best life, wild and free but well cared for and loved by all of us here at The Gold Bar.
Long Live Nuts & Bolts
Here's a picture of Bolts on the raz, shaken not stirred, he really is quite the ladies man.
